Frequently Asked Questions

What is CRPA-F?
The Certified Recovery Peer Advocate-Family is a new specialization under the existing CRPA – see, http://www.asapnys.org/ny-certification-board/certified-recovery-peer-advocate-crpa/. It offers certified peer advocates an additional opportunity to provide specialized family peer support. CRPA-F became eligible for Medicaid reimbursement in the OASAS system in 2019.
What are the career opportunities for CRPA-F?
The Certified Recovery Peer Advocate-Family is one of two NYS-recognized credentials required to provide Medicaid-reimbursable Family Peer Support Services.
These services consist of an array of formal and informal activities and supports provided to families caring for/raising a child who is experiencing social, emotional, medical, developmental, substance use, and/or behavioral challenges in their home, school, placement, and/or community.

Services may be offered in a variety of settings including community locations, the family or caregiver’s home, where the beneficiary lives, works, attends school, engages in services, and/or socializes.

The specialized expertise of the CRPA-F is expected to address a critical need for those agencies that serve families impacted by substance use disorders and want to enhance their service outcomes through peer-supported, long-term recovery.
