FIND A LOCAL YOUTH CLUBHOUSE
In 2016, the New York Office of Alcoholism & Substance Abuse Services awarded $2.6 million in annual funding to eleven organizations (each in a different county across the state) to create youth clubhouses for adolescents and young adults in Recovery or at risk for substance use disorders. These first-of-their-kind community-based havens promote peer-driven support and services in a non-clinical setting for young New Yorkers.
The clubhouses help individuals in Recovery develop social skills that promote prevention, long-term health, wellness, Recovery and a drug-free lifestyle. A variety of services and activities including homework help and tutoring, college and job preparation, community service opportunities, sports and fitness activities, group entertainment activities, and peer mentoring are also available. Youth and family advisory board members at each clubhouse play a big part in helping shape its activities and programming.
“Through participation in a Clubhouse, adolescents and young adults gain the opportunity to rejoin the worlds of friendships, family, community, employment, and education. The Clubhouses will also offer the services and support adolescents and young adults may individually need to progress in their recovery. The model provides a restorative environment for youth whose lives have been disrupted because of their substance use disorder and who would like the support of others in recovery. It will also offer a safe environment for youth who are looking for a safe, drug-free environment to engage socially with peers.” – NYS OASAS
