Medication Supported Recovery (MSR): An Introduction for Peer Recovery Coaches

This 4-hour course is approved for Certified Recovery Peer Advocate (CRPA) and Certified Addiction Recovery Coach (CARC) foundational training and renewal credits in New York State. This 4-hour introductory course provides Peers with foundational knowledge and skills. Grounded in core peer recovery competencies, the course explores multiple pathways of recovery and the role of peers in providing person-centered, strength-based, and recovery-oriented support while honoring individual choice and self-determination. Participants will learn about the Recovery Coach role and professional boundaries, advocacy, confidentiality, coaching and communication skills, stages of change and recovery, harm reduction, overdose prevention and naloxone, trauma and co-occurring conditions, crisis awareness, self-care, and connecting individuals with appropriate community and professional resources. Emphasis is placed on the unique role of the peer: Recovery Coaches do not prescribe, recommend, or manage medications, but instead support individuals in making informed, self-directed choices and pursuing the recovery goals that are meaningful to them. By the end of the course, participants will have a strong foundation in medication-supported recovery and the core competencies necessary to begin developing their careers as Recovery Coaches.
