Last year FOR-NY partnered with Faces and Voices of Recovery to present “The Science of Addiction & Recovery (SOAR),” a ground breaking training originally funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA).  SOAR was designed to open up the conversation about addiction and recovery to a wide range of audiences, including:  law enforcement, schools, parent and family groups, health care providers, housing and child welfare agencies, recovery support providers and more.

During 2016, FOR-NY delivered this training to more than 60 people who are now equipped with the knowledge and skills to speak effectively about the science of addiction and recovery and have gone on to share this message of hope and the resilience of recovery in their local communities.

The full day training is broken up into a morning session filled with valuable content and visuals (slides, video and handouts) detailing the impact of substance use on the brain, and an afternoon session that includes participant practice, feedback, discussion, and tips for effectively delivering the message to new audiences.

UPDATES

Feedback from participants was extremely positive, however, requests for additional content were made.  This year, FOR-NY will again present this training of trainers in three locations with the addition of more specific information about the impact of opioids, marijuana and alcohol on the brain.  We’ve also included more neuroscientific proof of the power of Recovery!

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

This training is for anyone who is (or wants to be) a recovery advocate; people in recovery, friends, family members and other allies of the recovery community, including trainers, peer professionals and treatment professionals in need of re-certification/re-credentialing credits. (Participants receive 6 credit hours approved by OASAS, NYCB and NYCA.)
